"Down by the Salley Gardens" was one of the first fingerstyle songs I tackled. This arrangement by Ken Middleton is fairly easy and very pretty. The tab is available for free on his website.
The text of the song is a poem by W. B. Yeats, who was inspired to write the poem after he heard an old woman in Country Sligo singing a folk song to herself. The verse was subsequently set to music in 1909 by Herbert Hughes to the traditional air "The Moorlough Shore," also known as "The Maids of the Mourne Shore." I find the text and the melody both sweet and haunting, a nice alternative to "Danny Boy" for St. Paddy's Day. (I happen to love "Danny Boy," too, but have yet to find a satisfying ukulele version of the song. Contact me if you know of one!)
So enjoy a trip to County Sligo --with your uke.
